UPDATE: A bold new proposal has been unveiled to transform Tamworth’s night-time economy, aiming to energize the region after dark. During a council meeting on February 25, 2025, officials presented a draft strategy that highlights the potential for over 300 businesses to thrive as night-time activity increases.
The Night Time Economy Strategy is designed to position Tamworth as a vibrant destination for culture and commerce. Mayor Russell Webb stated, “This plan will activate and hopefully make more vibrant the areas within our community,” emphasizing the need for more engaging activities in the Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas.
This urgent initiative responds to the growing demand for after-dark entertainment, with a special focus on enhancing public transport options to keep patrons moving safely. The proposed Night Rider transport pilot, estimated to cost around $1 million, aims to operate on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 6 PM to midnight. This service would connect key entertainment venues, similar to systems in place in Victoria.
The draft strategy identifies entertainment, food, and drink as crucial components of the night-time economy. It also recognizes the importance of transport, education, retail, and accommodation in fostering a lively night-time atmosphere. Currently, 98 venues in the region are already operating between 6 PM and 6 AM, including 25 pubs, 16 RSLs, and various arts and culture venues.
The council is actively seeking public feedback on this draft, which will be on exhibition for 28 days. Mayor Webb noted the consultation process is vital for refining the strategy, stating, “We’ll review comments and suggestions to ensure it meets community needs.”
Despite the opportunities, significant challenges remain. The report highlights issues such as poor transport accessibility, safety concerns, and a lack of high-quality dining options. However, there is optimism that by streamlining processes and investing strategically, Tamworth can become a model for other regional centers looking to enhance their own night-time offerings.
As part of the strategy, a focus on community engagement is paramount. Stakeholder consultations have revealed a desire to better utilize existing facilities and incorporate rural towns into night-time activities. The draft suggests improving public spaces, enhancing safety measures, and streamlining permits for outdoor dining as essential steps forward.
The proposed Performing Arts and Cultural Precinct, featuring a 600-seat theatre, is poised to be a transformative addition to the night-time landscape, although it may take time to materialize. Mayor Webb remarked, “The more activity we create in our CBD, the more we can support local businesses and employment opportunities.”
With a visionary plan in place, Tamworth is on the brink of a significant shift in its night-time economy. Public input is crucial as the city prepares to adopt these changes in the coming months.
Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate in this pivotal moment for Tamworth’s future. The city is ready to embrace a vibrant night-time culture, setting the stage for economic growth and community engagement.
