URGENT UPDATE: The Newdegate Machinery Field Days is gearing up for a monumental celebration as Tim Walter, founder of the Farmers’ Challenge, marks 30 years of farming in the close-knit community of Newdegate. This year’s event is set for September 3-4, 2025, and promises to draw participants and spectators from across Western Australia.
Walter, who moved from Bridgetown to Newdegate after visiting a friend’s farm, established the Farmers’ Challenge to emulate the success of other regional events like the Dowerin Machinery Field Days and Wagin Woolorama. “We thought we would just set up a series of events where it’s sort of a physical challenge and is a race against the clock,” he stated, emphasizing the competitive spirit that has fueled the event’s popularity.
The Farmers’ Challenge has become a highlight of the Machinery Field Days, attracting between eight and 16 teams annually. With four events running simultaneously, it offers thrilling entertainment for spectators and participants alike. Walter describes the challenge as “a good entertaining sport event to watch for spectators,” and he takes pride in designing unique courses each year.
“This year’s event has been well supported by the community,” Walter said. The involvement of local farmers not only showcases their skills but strengthens community ties. “Everyone seems to help everyone else out; if there’s ever any trouble, the community is always very happy to help each other out,” he added, highlighting the strong sense of belonging that defines Newdegate.
The significance of the Machinery Field Days extends beyond the local community, drawing crowds from as far as Esperance and significantly contributing to the Great Southern region’s economy. “It’s a great highlight for the town, and it’s good for the Great Southern for everyone to come and show their troughing machinery,” Walter noted.
As the countdown to this year’s event begins, excitement is palpable within the community. The Newdegate Machinery Field Days not only supports local businesses but also provides an opportunity for families to bond over shared experiences.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR: With the event just around the corner, all eyes will be on the Farmers’ Challenge as it continues to evolve and engage the community. Walter’s commitment to enhancing the event each year, coupled with the enthusiastic participation of local teams, ensures that this year’s celebration will be one for the books.
