Oatley RSL Hall to Honor Vietnam Veteran William ‘Billy’ Wright

BREAKING NEWS: The Oatley RSL Sub-branch hall will be officially renamed in honor of local hero and Vietnam veteran William ‘Billy’ Wright. This urgent tribute is set to take place on Friday, December 12, 2023, at 5 PM, at the hall located on Letitia Street.

Wright, a cherished figure in the Oatley community, has made significant contributions as a veteran, local historian, and former president of the Oatley RSL Sub-Branch. His military journey began when he was conscripted into the Australian Army in February 1966. After extensive training, he deployed to Vietnam in 1969, serving as a Corporal Engine Fitter with the Australian Army Aviation Corps.

During his time in Vietnam, Wright supported critical missions, including medical evacuations and forward air control, showcasing incredible bravery amid enemy fire. His dedication to service not only defined his military career but also his post-military life, where he applied his skills at Qantas for over 30 years.

“His passionate leadership culminated in his election as President of the Oatley RSL Sub-Branch in 2015,” said Max Britton, secretary of the Oatley RSL Sub-Branch. “During his presidency, he authored and funded a significant book on local war heroes.”

Wright’s impact on the community is profound, earning him the respect of peers, politicians, and veterans alike. His tireless support for both veterans and local residents has solidified his status as a beloved local figure.

In addition to renaming the hall, a mural honoring Wright and other Oatley veterans will be unveiled on Anzac Day 2026, further commemorating their sacrifices and contributions. This event marks a crucial moment for honoring local heroes and fostering community pride.

The dedication ceremony on December 12 is expected to draw a significant crowd, reflecting the community’s deep appreciation for Wright’s service and leadership. As the date approaches, the Oatley RSL Sub-branch aims to encourage public attendance to celebrate this vital recognition.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. The renaming of the Oatley RSL hall serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and the enduring legacy they leave behind.
