UPDATE: A 21-year-old P-plater has had his car impounded after allegedly driving 49kmh over the freeway speed limit. This incident occurred on December 20, 2023, when Wodonga Highway Patrol officers were conducting static speed checks on the Hume Freeway at Barnawartha North.
Authorities report the vehicle was clocked at an astonishing 159kmh in a 110kmh zone. In a further blow, the driver also returned a positive result to a roadside drug test. As a consequence, his vehicle has been impounded for a period of 30 days.
The young driver faces severe repercussions, including a summons to appear in court for charges related to driving at dangerous speeds, failing to display his P plates, and refusing to provide an oral fluid test.
This operation is part of Operation Roadwise, a crucial initiative by Victoria Police targeting impaired driving, speeding, and distraction offenses during the Christmas and New Year period. The operation is in effect until 11:59 PM on January 1, 2024, aiming to enhance road safety as holiday traffic increases.
In a related effort, Operation Harmony is also underway in Benalla, focusing on family violence. This proactive initiative engages with individuals at high risk of committing future offenses, aiming to provide support and prevent further incidents.
Authorities emphasize the importance of road safety during this festive season. The message is clear: reckless driving will not be tolerated, and those who endanger others on the road will face serious consequences.
