UPDATE: The iconic yacht Palm Beach XI, formerly known as Wild Oats XI, is making a highly anticipated return to the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race with groundbreaking upgrades aimed at reclaiming her title. As the race kicks off on December 26, 2025, the competition is heating up, but skepticism surrounds whether this revamped supermaxi can secure line honors.
New owner Mark Richards, a sailing legend with nine previous line honors victories, has spearheaded a comprehensive refurbishment of the 100-foot yacht. Upgrades include a new keel, bulb, and daggerboards designed to enhance performance. Richards has expressed confidence, stating, “We’re looking forward to the challenge. There’s zero concern whatsoever.”
However, the yacht’s extensive modifications have limited her preparation time. As of Christmas Day, the crew had only sailed together three times, one session occurring immediately after the official race briefing. Richards candidly remarked, “We’ve spent a lot of time on the boat, but it’s been in the shed.” The yacht was christened just earlier this month, hitting the water for the first time on December 10.
Despite her impressive upgrades, Richards confirmed that Palm Beach XI will not feature the revolutionary c-foils initially planned for this race. “We’re just not quite ready, which is a real shame,” he added. Out of the six 100-foot supermaxis competing this year, Palm Beach XI is the only one that has not yet raced in the Bluewater Pointscore series, crucial for preparation.
The yacht completed her mandatory qualifying passage last weekend, returning to Sydney Harbour after a rigorous 24-hour sail. “Doing our 24-hour qualifier, it was amazing how everything came together,” Richards said, highlighting the yacht’s readiness for the challenge ahead.
The competition is fierce, with Matt Allen, co-skipper of the formidable Master Lock Comanche, expressing doubts about Palm Beach XI’s chances. He stated, “They might come into calculations a bit later on in the race, it depends on how many miles we get on them in the earlier stages of the race.” Forecasts indicate that upwind conditions may favor reigning champion LawConnect, while Comanche remains a top contender.
Richards remains optimistic, asserting that the boat’s upgrades have significantly enhanced her capabilities. “We’re pretty confident the upwind performance will be better than we’ve ever had before,” he said.
As excitement builds for what is sure to be a thrilling race, Richards emphasizes that this is just the beginning for Palm Beach XI. “It’s going to be very exciting in the future, not just in this race. We’re looking forward to a couple of years campaigning and showing what we’re all about,” he declared.
With the race just days away, all eyes will be on Palm Beach XI as she embarks on her quest for glory in the Sydney to Hobart, a legendary event that continues to captivate sailing enthusiasts worldwide. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
