Parkes Community Mourns Rugby Legend Laurie Wakefield, 77

URGENT UPDATE: The Parkes sporting community is heartbroken following the passing of rugby league legend Laurie Wakefield Senior at the age of 77. Wakefield, affectionately known as “Darby,” passed away on December 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that transcends sports.

Known primarily for his remarkable contributions to rugby league, Wakefield also showcased his athleticism on the hockey field. The NSW Rugby League expressed profound sadness over the loss, highlighting Wakefield’s enduring impact on the sport. His home club, the Parkes Spacemen, joined in mourning, recognizing him as a “true clubman to the end.”

Wakefield’s impressive career began when he was signed by the Parramatta Eels at the young age of 22 in 1970. Despite his smaller stature, he played as a fullback with remarkable skill and tenacity, earning accolades for his performances. He had already represented NSW and Country before joining the Eels, making his mark in the opening game of the 1970 State of Origin series against Queensland.

In that intense match, NSW narrowly lost 16-15, but Wakefield’s persistence shone through when he came off the bench in the second match, contributing to a victory of 22-8. Over his two years with the Eels, he played 14 games and was considered unfortunate not to have played more, as he competed with the celebrated fullback Ken Thornett.

“Laurie was tough, a short yet mighty player with a big heart,” said Bob Walsh, director of NSW Rugby League, in a statement on their website. “He was a good bloke who returned to help out at Parkes once he finished playing.” Walsh extended heartfelt condolences to Wakefield’s wife, Dawn, family, and friends during this difficult time.

The Parkes Spacemen expressed their gratitude for Wakefield’s contributions, stating on social media, “Laurie was a local legend who played for NSW firsts, NSW Country firsts, Parramatta Eels, and Parkes Spacemen.” They fondly recalled seeing him in August at their Old Boys Day, and emphasized, “Our thoughts are with Dawn and his children and grandchildren.”

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Wakefield’s life at a funeral service scheduled for 10 AM on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Parkes. The service will be followed by interment in the lawn portion of the Parkes Cemetery.

As the community comes together to honor a true icon of their sporting history, the legacy of Laurie Wakefield Senior will continue to inspire future generations.
