Perth Lynx Coach Sparks Olympian’s Career Revival Ahead of Finals

URGENT UPDATE: Olympian Anneli Maley has reignited her basketball career under the guidance of Perth Lynx coach Ryan Petrik, just in time for the WNBL finals. Maley, 27, is now thriving with the Lynx, breaking rebound records and making a significant impact since joining the team in June 2023.

After contemplating stepping away from the sport, Maley credits Petrik for helping her rediscover her passion for basketball. “Coming to Perth was exactly what was supposed to happen because I really found myself here,” she stated ahead of the Lynx’s match against the Geelong Venom on Sunday. Her journey has included signing with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and positioning the Lynx as strong contenders this season.

Maley’s transformation is deeply personal. She struggled with the mental demands of elite sports, stating, “Before I got to Perth, I let my performance define how I felt about myself. I just wasn’t happy and was considering taking a little bit of time off.” With Petrik’s support, she has learned to manage her mental health challenges while excelling on the court.

In addition to her achievements, Maley is also guiding her younger brother, Finnbar Maley, a player for the Adelaide Crows. She emphasizes the importance of mental health and representation in sports, sharing her experiences to help him navigate his professional path.

Meanwhile, Erin Bollmann, a forward for the Adelaide Lightning, is making waves this season after unexpectedly entering the WNBL. Initially focused on obtaining her Australian permanent residency visa, Bollmann’s plans shifted dramatically following a season-ending injury to WNBA import Serena Sundell on November 9.

“This has been one of the biggest transitions I’ve ever experienced,” she remarked on her quick rise to prominence. The Lightning, facing the Southside Melbourne Flyers on Sunday, will be looking to build on their momentum.

As the WNBL season heats up, the Sydney Flames will play two crucial matches in Round 11, starting against the UC Capitals on Saturday before clashing with the Flyers on Tuesday. Additionally, a rematch of last season’s grand final will see the Townsville Fire take on the Bendigo Spirit on New Year’s Eve.

Stay tuned for more developments as this thrilling season unfolds, showcasing the resilience and passion of athletes like Anneli Maley.
