UPDATE: The Perth Wildcats face a critical moment as coach John Rillie urgently calls for star player Jo Lual-Acuil jnr to remain on the court after a narrow 85-84 loss to the Illawarra Hawks. Lual-Acuil fouled out with just 3:56 remaining in the match while leading by five points, leaving the Wildcats struggling without their powerhouse.
The loss highlights a concerning trend for Lual-Acuil, who has been plagued by foul troubles, having also fouled out against the Sydney Kings earlier this season. Before his exit, he had posted impressive stats with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks. His absence was felt as teammate JaVale McGee stepped in, scoring 24 points and sealing the game with a decisive free throw.
“Players are the superstars. Only the players are the superstars. Let’s not get lost on why everyone is here,” Rillie stated, emphasizing the need to protect his key players.
Rillie was so determined to keep Lual-Acuil in the game that he used his Coach’s Challenge on a controversial fifth foul call, an attempt that ultimately proved fruitless. This decision later cost the Wildcats, as a late foul against McGee allowed him to score the winning free throw with only 1.2 seconds left on the clock, inciting anger among the fans.
The match saw dramatic shifts in momentum, particularly in the second half, where the Wildcats’ shooting performance plummeted. They managed just one of their 17 three-point attempts in the first half, further compounding their woes as they entered the match with a three-point shooting percentage of 29.7% over their last seven games.
Despite the struggles, Rillie remains optimistic. “At the end of the game, basketball is a game about making shots,” he remarked, confident in the quality of the shots taken by his players.
In the final minutes, the Wildcats managed to rally with three consecutive three-pointers, including a clutch shot from Elijah Pepper, who had previously missed all of his seven attempts from beyond the arc during the game. Rillie stated, “We will continue to back ourselves,” highlighting the team’s resolve moving forward.
As the Wildcats sit at 4-4 this season, they now face a challenging schedule ahead. Their next three games will be on the road, featuring matchups against Tasmania and South East Melbourne, culminating in a highly anticipated clash with Bryce Cotton in Adelaide.
In a move to bolster the roster, the Wildcats’ new import, David Duke jnr, is set to arrive in Australia on Monday, bringing fresh hope to the team’s campaign.
As the Wildcats prepare for their upcoming challenges, all eyes will be on Lual-Acuil and his ability to stay on the court, as they aim to turn their season around and reclaim their position in the league.
