Police Investigate Death of Woman in Northern Territory Custody

URGENT UPDATE: A 44-year-old woman has tragically died in custody at the Tennant Creek Watch House, prompting an immediate police investigation. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, nearly 1,000 km from Darwin, during routine cell checks by local police.

The woman was discovered unconscious in her cell. Officers initiated CPR before St John Ambulance arrived and took over first aid efforts. Despite their attempts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Tennant Creek Hospital.

Authorities are treating this incident as a death in custody, and a crime scene has been established at the watch house. According to NT Police, “The cause of death is yet to be determined.” This incident raises significant concerns about the treatment of individuals in custody, echoing prior calls for urgent government intervention in similar cases.

Earlier this year, the Northern Territory faced public outcry following the death of a 68-year-old senior elder from Wadeye and Kumanjayi White, a 24-year-old Warlpiri man, both of whom died while in custody. White’s death sparked nationwide vigils and protests after he was restrained by police in a Coles supermarket in Alice Springs.

The community is now left mourning and searching for answers as the investigation unfolds. Local advocates and family members are calling for transparency and accountability regarding the circumstances surrounding this latest death.

As authorities continue their investigation, the public is urged to stay informed about developments. This tragic incident underscores the pressing need for reforms in the treatment of individuals in custody across Australia.
