Police Launch Urgent Caravan as Search for Dezi Freeman Enters Day 6

UPDATE: The urgent search for suspected police killer Dezi Freeman has intensified as authorities establish an information caravan in Bright on September 4, 2023. This marks the sixth day of the manhunt, with local police encouraging the community to come forward with any information regarding the fugitive.

Located on Ireland Street, the caravan will be staffed daily by officers who seek to engage residents and gather critical leads. “Locals and people within the community are encouraged to drop by and have a chat,” stated a police spokeswoman. “We want to encourage the community to come forward and share any information they have. It is also a place they can speak to police about any concerns.”

The search for the 56-year-old Freeman escalated following the tragic shooting on August 26, which resulted in the deaths of officers Neal Thompson and Vadim De Waart, and left a third member injured. Despite extensive efforts from tactical police, there have been no confirmed sightings of Freeman since that fateful day.

In a related development, police arrested a man in Bright on September 1 and charged him with imitation gun and marijuana offenses. Officials have not confirmed whether this arrest is connected to the Freeman case, but it has raised concerns within the community.

In addition, Freeman’s wife and son were apprehended at a residence in Porepunkah last week but were released without charge. As the search continues, the community remains on high alert, with authorities urging anyone who may have seen Freeman to come forward immediately.

Funerals for the fallen officers will be held at the police academy. Senior Constable Vadim De Waart will be honored on September 5, while Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson will be farewelled on September 8. Both services will be conducted with full police honors, although they will not be open to the public.

The emotional toll on the community is palpable as they grapple with the loss of their officers while facing the threat posed by Freeman. Authorities continue to assure residents of their commitment to public safety as the search for the fugitive continues.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity directly to the police at the information caravan. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated—every piece of information could be vital in bringing Freeman to justice.
