BREAKING: Authorities have just announced a major drug bust, seizing 41 kilograms of cocaine valued at a staggering $6.5 million from a truck driver in Chiltern on the Hume Highway. This operation, carried out by the VIPER Taskforce, represents one of the largest drug seizures in North East history, highlighting the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Australia.
The incident unfolded on August 13, 2023, at approximately 4:30 PM when officers intercepted a southbound truck driven by David Woodbury, a 40-year-old father of three. Woodbury had reportedly tested positive for ice just minutes before the search began. Upon searching the cabin, police discovered three black duffel bags in a passenger-side storage compartment, one of which contained a visible package.
According to a detective from the VIPER Taskforce, the cocaine was packaged in a manner typical of cartel operations, with logos resembling Shakira or Coca-Cola. The total weight of the seized drugs was confirmed to be 41 kilograms, with current market values indicating that such a quantity could fetch between $160,000 and $200,000 per kilogram.
Woodbury is suspected of working for a high-level criminal syndicate and allegedly received $5,000 to transport the drugs. He has claimed he was unaware of the exact nature of his cargo, although authorities believe he suspected it could involve either drugs or cash.
During a court appearance at the Wodonga Magistrates Court, a detective sergeant opposed Woodbury’s bail bid, citing concerns about his potential flight risk. “The nature of the applicant’s work requires him to travel overnight and interstate,” the sergeant stated, emphasizing the significant incentive for Woodbury to leave the state.
Lawyer Dane Keenes raised questions regarding the legality of the search that followed Woodbury’s positive drug test. However, the magistrate, Ian Watkins, expressed skepticism about the strength of the defense’s case, stating, “I can’t form the view it is a weak prosecution case.” Woodbury has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on November 20.
The seizure comes on the heels of a previous operation in Howlong on July 30, which resulted in the confiscation of five kilograms of cocaine. This latest bust underscores the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and the serious implications for those involved.
As this story develops, authorities continue to investigate the broader criminal network linked to this significant drug bust. The community remains on alert as police work tirelessly to dismantle these dangerous operations and keep illicit substances off the streets.
