UPDATE: Police have dramatically increased patrols in Mernda after a 22-year-old good Samaritan, Aidan Becker, was fatally stabbed while trying to protect a 14-year-old boy from a group of four teenage attackers at the Mernda Railway Station on Friday evening. The community is mourning Becker’s tragic loss, with tributes pouring in for the hero who intervened selflessly.
Authorities report that the incident occurred around 6:30 PM as Becker, a security guard off duty, attempted to defend the young boy from a violent group of alleged assailants. Inspector Nigel L’Estrange of the Homicide Squad described the attack as “savage,” involving punches, kicks, and weapons. Despite urgent medical attention from paramedics, Becker succumbed to his life-threatening injuries at the scene.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts break for them,” and announced the deployment of the Violence Reduction Unit to provide community support and ensure safety for students traveling to and from school. The unit will coordinate with Victoria Police and the Education Department to address the community’s concerns following this shocking event.
In connection with the stabbing, four male teenagers have been arrested. Mike Pikos, 18, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday morning, facing charges of murder and armed robbery. His attorney noted that it was Pikos’ first time in custody, raising concerns for his well-being as a vulnerable prisoner. Additionally, a 16-year-old from Whittlesea and a 17-year-old from Geelong have been charged with similar offenses, while another 17-year-old remains hospitalized under police guard without charges as of Sunday.
“This is just a tragic situation where our victim here is just a good Samaritan who was trying to do the right thing,” Det Insp L’Estrange said, emphasizing Becker’s unaggressive approach as he tried to escort the boy away from danger.
The community response has been overwhelming, with Becker’s former team, Yarrambat Junior Football Club, describing him as “a very special young man.” Their heartfelt message highlights his selfless nature: “Aidan was the kind of teammate every club hopes for—selfless, team first, and always willing to put others before himself.”
As police continue their investigation, the community and authorities are left grappling with the aftermath of this brutal attack. The next court appearance for Pikos is scheduled for June 24, where further developments are anticipated.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who intervene in acts of violence, and the community is uniting to honor Becker’s legacy while demanding increased safety measures.
