Premier Criticizes Story Bridge Palestine March Plans Amid Controversy

UPDATE: Controversy brews as Premier David Crisafulli criticizes plans for a major protest on the Story Bridge this Sunday, August 24. Organizers, the Justice for Palestine Magan-djin, seek permission for a rally to advocate for Gaza, reflecting the urgency of the ongoing crisis.

The protest aims to mirror last weekend’s massive rally on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which drew an estimated 90,000 participants. Organizers claim the numbers could surge to between 200,000 and 300,000 for the upcoming event. They emphasize that this demonstration is crucial to show solidarity with the Palestinian community.

Premier Crisafulli has expressed his disapproval, stating, “This is the same bridge our lord mayor refused to light in the colors of the Palestinian flag, denying solidarity to a grieving community.” He has left the decision to Queensland Police, who will independently assess the request for the rally based on community safety.

Authorities are currently evaluating the potential impact of closing the bridge, with Crisafulli confirming that “shutting down a city is no way to endear Queenslanders to your cause.” The Queensland Police Service has previously blocked an unrelated protest over pedestrian access, underscoring their commitment to maintaining order during peak times.

Police are aware of the individuals’ rights to peaceful assembly under the Human Rights Act and the Peaceful Assembly Act. A spokesperson stated, “The QPS recognizes that every person has the right to peacefully assemble.”

As the situation develops, all eyes are on the police’s response and whether the march will proceed as planned. With tensions surrounding the Gaza conflict escalating, the call for solidarity through this march has gained significant traction.

This protest is poised to be a pivotal moment, not only for advocates of Palestinian rights but also for the broader community as they grapple with the implications of civil unrest and public safety.

Stay tuned for updates as authorities make their decision and the community reacts to this unfolding event.
