Queensland Deputy Premier Urges Calm Ahead of Anti-Immigration Rally

UPDATE: A heavy police presence is set for Brisbane this Sunday as the controversial March for Australia anti-immigration rally is scheduled to take place. Organised by far-right nationalists and endorsed by neo-Nazi groups, the rally has sparked widespread condemnation, with local leaders urging members of Queensland’s Indian community to remain at home due to safety concerns.

Authorities confirm that the event, which is expected to draw significant crowds, poses potential risks for violence. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie has defended the rally’s right to protest, emphasizing the need for peace. “Everyone needs to be able to know they live in a free society…but also rights and responsibilities in terms of loving your neighbour and not inciting hatred,” he stated on Saturday.

Bleijie’s remarks come amid escalating tensions, particularly after Federal MP Bob Katter publicly supported the rally and appeared to threaten a journalist over questions regarding his Lebanese heritage. Such incidents have intensified fears of violent confrontations during the protest.

The government has confirmed that police were informed the protest could proceed safely. However, Bleijie urged participants to respect all individuals and refrain from displaying hate symbols, referencing the Hamas flag seen at a recent rally for Palestine. “What we ask of people is respect everybody…not inciting hate to any group in Queensland,” he added.

This rally is part of a larger wave of anti-immigration sentiment that has been gaining traction across Australia, alarming many community leaders and residents. The potential for unrest has prompted heightened security measures, with Brisbane police preparing to manage the event effectively.

As the situation develops, local authorities are monitoring the atmosphere closely, reminding citizens of their rights to protest while emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order. With the rally scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2023, the focus now shifts to how the community will respond and how police will ensure safety amidst the tensions.

Residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution, as the atmosphere in Brisbane remains charged ahead of this significant event. The community’s response will likely shape the narrative around immigration and public safety in the region moving forward.
