UPDATE: Queensland is set to revolutionize its energy storage capabilities, with a groundbreaking investment of $10 million in Vecco Group’s vanadium battery supply chain. This initiative, announced by The Hon. Ros Bates and The Hon. Dale Last, marks Australia’s first comprehensive vanadium battery supply chain, aiming to bolster the region’s economy and create nearly 600 jobs.
The Crisafulli Government’s investment will establish a commercial-scale electrolyte facility in Townsville, utilizing vanadium sourced from Julia Creek. This facility will anchor a robust pit-to-port manufacturing chain, poised to supply vanadium flow batteries to the global energy storage market. Early works are scheduled to begin in 2026, with operations anticipated to commence by 2028.
Minister Bates emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “Queensland has the resources the world needs, and the Crisafulli Government is making sure those resources deliver jobs, trade, and prosperity for our regions.” This project is a critical step in turning Queensland’s mineral wealth into tangible economic benefits, showcasing a renewed commitment to job creation and export opportunities after a decade of decline.
Minister Last echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s role in restoring confidence in Queensland’s resources sector. “The Crisafulli Government is delivering practical measures to unlock the full potential of our resources and manufacturing sectors,” he said. This investment is part of a broader strategy to connect international investors with Queensland’s innovative capacities, aiming to enhance regional employment and economic stability.
Vecco Group’s Managing Director, Tom Northcott, stated, “The transformative Vecco Critical Minerals Project will create hundreds of regional jobs.” Northcott’s remarks underline the project’s anticipated impact on the local economy and its potential to position Queensland as a leader in meeting the growing global demand for energy storage solutions.
This ambitious project not only promises to revitalize North Queensland’s economy but also reflects a significant shift in Australia’s approach to energy storage and critical minerals. As global demand for sustainable energy solutions surges, Queensland stands ready to meet this challenge head-on, transforming its resources into a competitive advantage.
As the situation develops, stakeholders and residents alike will be watching closely. The establishment of this vanadium battery supply chain could set a precedent for future investments in the region, paving the way for a new era of economic growth and innovation.
Stay tuned for updates on this vital project as Queensland positions itself at the forefront of the energy transition.
