BREAKING: Rupertswood Sharks have made history by reaching their first-ever grand final in the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) after a decisive victory over Glenroy in the preliminary final on Sunday. This marks a significant turnaround for the Sharks since joining the league in 2021, following a rollercoaster journey that included a division 1 preliminary final and a relegation.
The Sharks showcased their determination with a commanding performance, defeating Glenroy 12.9 (81) to 5.10 (40) at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn. Co-coach Brad Fox expressed his elation post-match, stating, “It’s just fantastic… you do 10 months of training to get this opportunity.”
On Saturday, Rupertswood will face Westmeadows in the grand final, aiming for redemption after previously losing to them in a nail-biting finish earlier this season. “Their last win against us was with less than a second to go,” Fox recalled. “We’ve learned from that. It will be a ripping grand final,” he added, emphasizing the team’s growth and resilience.
This season has seen the Sharks overcome multiple challenges, including player turnover and injuries. Fox noted that the team faced a “flat spot” mid-season but managed to refocus and execute their game plan successfully in the latter stages. “We just reset. The guys have executed on that ever since,” he said.
Fraser Phelan-Smith stood out with four goals and was named best on ground for the second consecutive week. Other key players included skipper Daniel Kavanagh and co-coach Clayton Bonello, who both played pivotal roles in securing the win against Glenroy.
This upcoming grand final is not just a chance for glory; it represents the culmination of the Sharks’ arduous journey and their aspiration to return to division 1. Fans are eagerly anticipating the showdown against Westmeadows, with the Sharks determined to seize this historic opportunity.
As the grand final approaches, excitement builds within the community. Rupertswood fans are urged to rally behind their team as they aim to bring home the championship title on Saturday.
Stay tuned for updates as the Sharks prepare for this pivotal match!
