Russian forces have unleashed a significant wave of missile attacks against Ukraine, targeting its two largest cities, Kyiv and Kharkiv. The assault, described as the most intense of 2026, resulted in at least four fatalities and numerous injuries, while prompting emergency power cuts in the Ukrainian capital due to infrastructure damage.
According to Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo, emergency power outages were implemented in Kyiv following a brief but severe missile barrage that took place early on Tuesday. The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, characterized the attack as short but intense. Private energy company DTEK reported that the strikes inflicted significant damage on equipment at one of its thermal power plants, further complicating the energy situation in the region.
The attacks have been part of a broader strategy by Russia, which has consistently targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the invasion began in February 2022. The aim has been to disrupt electricity and heating supplies during the winter months, while Ukrainian air defenses struggle to intercept the incoming missiles and drones.
Details of the Assault
Ukrainian Telegram channels indicated that approximately 20 ballistic missiles were launched within an hour overnight, marking one of the most sustained attacks so far this year. While Reuters could not independently verify these reports, the scale of the missile strikes has raised alarms across the nation. The Ukrainian armed forces have yet to provide a comprehensive assessment of the attack, and there has been no official response from Russia regarding the strikes.
In Kharkiv, located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that four individuals lost their lives in an attack on the outskirts of the city. Additionally, six people sustained injuries. The Ukrainian State Emergency Service confirmed that the Kharkiv assault targeted a postal terminal, resulting in the destruction of buildings and igniting multiple fires across an area of approximately 500 square meters. Rescuers managed to save 30 individuals, including two who were trapped under rubble.
In the southern port city of Odesa, five people were reported injured due to the overnight missile attack. The State Emergency Service indicated that fires broke out at several locations, including an unused building, a fitness center, and a vocational school.
Kryvyi Rih, an industrial city in central Ukraine, also faced consequences from the missile strikes, with regional officials reporting two injuries resulting from damage to civilian infrastructure, homes, and gas pipelines.
As the conflict continues, the humanitarian impact grows, with emergency services working tirelessly to respond to the needs of those affected. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are anticipated as authorities assess the full ramifications of the attacks.
