Search for Alleged Killer Enters Second Week Amid Police Hunt

UPDATE: The urgent search for alleged killer Dezi Freeman has entered its second week, with police intensifying efforts in Victoria’s High Country. Authorities confirm that Freeman is suspected of fatally shooting two police officers and injuring another before fleeing into the bushland.

At the Wangaratta police station, the atmosphere is heavy with grief. Hundreds of bouquets and heartfelt cards have been placed in tribute to fallen officers Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart. The community’s pain is palpable as framed portraits of the officers smile down from a table, evoking memories of their service.

As of August 29, 2023, heavily armed police returned to Freeman’s home in Porepunkah, ramping up the search operation. A helicopter circles ominously above Mount Buffalo, while police monitor roads in the vicinity, seeking any leads on the fugitive’s whereabouts.

In the nearby town of Bright, authorities have established an information center, urging locals to come forward with any tips that could assist in capturing Freeman. Superintendent Brett Kahan stated that investigators believe Freeman is still alive and may be receiving assistance from community members to evade capture.

Authorities have mobilized more than 450 officers in a coordinated effort to locate Freeman, who has vanished into dense bushland after the tragic shootings. The police vow to continue their relentless search until he is apprehended.

The emotional toll on the community is significant, as residents grapple with the loss of their local heroes. Police are determined to bring justice for Thompson and De Waart, emphasizing that the investigation will not relent.

Anyone with information about Freeman’s location is urged to contact local authorities immediately. This developing situation remains critical as police continue their extensive search efforts, focusing on the safety of the community and the need to apprehend the suspect as quickly as possible.

Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent and evolving situation.
