UPDATE: In a heartwarming initiative, the NSW SES Menai Unit volunteers, accompanied by their beloved mascot Paddy the Platypus, delivered joy and gifts to children at Sutherland Hospital on December 13, 2023. This festive visit aimed to uplift the spirits of young patients spending the holiday season in the hospital.
The volunteer team, consisting of seven members, made a significant impact by visiting the Children’s Ward and Paediatric Emergency Department. Hemant Raval, Deputy Unit Commander of the Menai Unit, emphasized the importance of community support, especially after a demanding year that saw their unit respond to over 1,400 incidents related to storms and floods in the Sutherland Shire.
“We wanted to shift our focus from the frontline to spreading some holiday cheer,” Raval stated. “Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces today really reminded us why we do what we do.” His words resonate with the spirit of giving that defines the SES volunteers.
The visit came as a welcome surprise for Pippa Frankland, who had been hospitalized for three nights due to complications from the flu that developed into pneumonia. Her mother, Katherine Frankland, expressed gratitude, saying, “Pippy and her siblings were super excited to see the SES. It was a bright end to our hospital stay.”
The emotional impact of such visits cannot be overstated. Colin Malone, Assistant Commissioner of the NSW SES, highlighted the vital role volunteers play in their communities. “Our volunteers are always ready to help, be it storms, floods, rescues, or searches for missing people,” he noted. “This visit is another example of our volunteers extending their support in selfless acts that truly embody community spirit.”
As the holiday season unfolds, initiatives like this remind us of the strength of community and the importance of kindness. The SES Menai unit’s commitment to serving and uplifting their local community shines brightly, especially during challenging times.
What’s Next: More community outreach events are expected from the SES as they continue to prioritize support and care for families in need this holiday season. Residents are encouraged to engage with local SES activities to foster community spirit and resilience.
Stay tuned for more updates on community initiatives and volunteer efforts as they unfold.
