Shane Hryhorec Drives Urgent Change in Accessible Travel Worldwide

UPDATE: Shane Hryhorec, a disability advocate and entrepreneur, is urgently pushing for transformative changes in global travel accessibility following his life-altering accident. Seventeen years after breaking his neck in a swimming accident, Hryhorec is on a mission to raise awareness about the challenges faced by travelers with disabilities, especially in the face of inadequate customer service from airlines and cruise lines.

Hryhorec’s quest comes after countless experiences of being denied suitable accommodations during travel. His frustration is echoed by many, particularly the 38 percent of individuals over 65 who report some form of disability. “Traveling in a wheelchair is possible,” he asserts, “but the travel industry must step up and eliminate barriers.”

The urgency of Hryhorec’s mission resonates as he has been named a finalist in the 2025 Australian of the Year Local Hero Awards. He founded Accessible Beaches Australia in 2016, which successfully expanded the number of accessible beaches in Australia from five to over 60, with plans for many more. This initiative aims to make coastal experiences inclusive for everyone.

In addition to his advocacy work, Hryhorec has gained significant attention through his popular TikTok series, Wheel Around the World, which has attracted 242,000 followers and amassed over 100 million views online. His viral video showcasing wheelchair travel on an MSC cruise garnered an astonishing 40 million views, highlighting the immense interest in accessible travel content.

Hryhorec’s humor and candidness make him a relatable figure. His social media presence, particularly on Instagram with @wheelaroundtheworldwithshane, has captivated audiences and encouraged discussions about travel inclusivity. His latest adventure, “Can I get around the entire island of Taiwan in a wheelchair?” is generating buzz on his YouTube channel.

The travel industry is now facing increased scrutiny as advocates like Hryhorec demand better service and accommodations for those with mobility challenges. His work is a clarion call for airlines, cruise companies, and hotels to prioritize accessibility and ensure that every traveler, regardless of their physical ability, can explore the world without unnecessary hurdles.

As Hryhorec continues to break barriers and raise awareness, the travel industry must heed his call for change. The next steps involve not just awareness but action from companies to overhaul their policies and practices regarding accessibility.

Stay tuned for Hryhorec’s updates as he travels and advocates for a more inclusive world. Follow his journey as he challenges the status quo and inspires others to join the movement for accessible travel.
