UPDATE: A 33-year-old man has been fined $500 and ordered to pay $90 in compensation after stealing a bottle of rum from Dan Murphy’s in Bathurst. The incident, which occurred on June 30, 2025, was captured on CCTV and has resulted in serious legal consequences for the shoplifter, identified as Andrew Shepheard.
Shepheard, who had just completed his parole on May 17, was not present at the Bathurst Local Court on September 10, 2025, but entered a guilty plea through a statement. He asked for the matter to be handled in his absence, citing health concerns related to a possible COVID-19 infection.
According to police documents, Shepheard was seen at Dan Murphy’s around 2:45 PM on the day of the theft, slipping a bottle of Old River Rum under his jumper before leaving the store without paying. Following the theft, he returned to the store on July 11, 2025, but was denied service by the manager due to his previous actions, highlighting the store’s strict policy against repeat offenders.
Police apprehended Shepheard on July 24, 2025, at his home on Durham Street. During the interaction, which was recorded on body-worn video, he claimed that if he had left without paying, it was an accident and expressed willingness to cover the cost.
Magistrate Arthur Aguirre remarked on the case, stating, “An expensive bottle of rum, sergeant, because it comes with court costs.” He emphasized the seriousness of Shepheard’s actions, especially given his recent completion of parole, calling it “playing with fire.”
The court’s ruling sends a clear message about the consequences of shoplifting, especially for individuals with prior offenses. This incident not only affects the store’s bottom line but also highlights ongoing challenges related to theft and accountability in retail environments.
As the legal repercussions unfold, the community is reminded of the importance of responsible behavior and the severe implications of theft. Authorities continue to monitor such cases closely, reinforcing the message that crime will not be tolerated.
