BREAKING: Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen is set to star as Toto in an exciting new drag pantomime inspired by Wicked and The Wizard of Oz. This vibrant production will take place at Pleasance Theatre in Islington, North London, and promises to be a show-stopping event featuring a talented cast of drag queens.
The show, titled Wicked Witches, also features a surprise appearance from former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who will take on the role of the Wizard of Oz-lington. McKellen, known for his iconic performances on stage and screen, described his role as “a washed-up rock star dog with more bark than bite” and expressed his enthusiasm, declaring he “would be barking mad to refuse” this unique opportunity.
This announcement comes at a time when audiences are eager for diverse and inclusive storytelling. The writer and director, Shane ShayShay Konno, emphasized the importance of championing positive trans stories and heroic characters, particularly in light of increasing legislation against trans individuals. “Wicked Witches sends a message of celebrating our differences and accepting others to audiences of all ages,” he stated.
Joining McKellen in this spectacular pantomime are notable drag performers including Gigi Zahir/Crayola The Queen as The Wicked Witch ‘Adelphaba’ and Eleanor Burke/Apple Derrieres as The Good Witch ‘Kelly Oz-Born’. The cast also features Ro Suppa as Dorothy, Lew Ray as Tin 2.0, and Nick MacDuff as the Scarecrow.
The show is poised to become a cultural highlight, particularly as it aligns with McKellen’s dynamic year. Having recently recovered from a significant hospital stay following a fall during a performance, the 86-year-old actor shows no signs of slowing down. Earlier this year, McKellen made a splash in the directorial debut of 14-year-old Jacob Franklin, showcasing his versatility by playing a character inspired by LGBTQIA+ figures from the 1970s and 80s.
In addition to his upcoming role in Wicked Witches, McKellen opened a groundbreaking production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night featuring an all-trans and non-binary cast and even graced the stage at Glastonbury during the Scissor Sisters’ set.
As anticipation builds, theatre enthusiasts and McKellen fans alike are eager to witness this innovative production that celebrates diversity and creativity. The show is set to make waves in the theatre community, encouraging audiences to embrace uniqueness and acceptance.
Stay tuned for more updates and be prepared to witness Sir Ian McKellen’s latest theatrical adventure when Wicked Witches opens its doors in Islington. This is an event you won’t want to miss!
