South Australia Election Campaign Launches with One Nation Surge

UPDATE: The official campaign for South Australia’s state election has just launched, igniting a fierce political battle as the Labor government touts its economic successes while the Liberal opposition zeroes in on healthcare. The election is set for March 21, and early polling indicates a significant surge in support for the One Nation Party.

Earlier today, Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas, alongside Deputy Kyam Maher, visited Government House in Adelaide to issue the election writs. Malinauskas emphasized his administration’s achievements, stating, “The economy, wages, and housing are growing faster than anywhere else in the country.” He also highlighted that unemployment is at historic lows, stressing the need to convert this economic momentum into improved living standards for South Australians.

In a notable response, Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn announced a major health initiative aimed at supporting regional families. Her plan proposes to increase overnight accommodation claims for medical travel from $44 to $110, benefiting those living over 50km from health services. “We want families across the regions to attend important appointments with confidence,” Hurn stated.

Recent polling data reveals a dramatic shift in voter sentiment. According to a YouGov-Advertiser poll and a Newspoll, Labor commands 44 percent of primary support, while One Nation is closing in at 24 percent. The Liberal Party trails significantly with only 14 percent support. If these numbers hold, the Liberals could struggle to maintain any of their 13 seats in the upcoming election.

Political analysts are closely watching the rise of One Nation, with Flinders University public policy lecturer Josh Sunman commenting, “This is a test case to see if One Nation can break through. If that were to happen here, it would signify a seismic shift in Australian politics.”

Hurn, who has led the Liberal Party for less than three months, acknowledged the weight of the polling numbers, saying, “You have to stay your course and focus on your strategy.”

As the election campaign heats up, the stakes are high for all parties involved. For Labor, it’s about enhancing their electoral victory. For the Liberals, the critical question remains: will they survive the electoral challenge? Meanwhile, One Nation stands at a crossroads, contemplating whether to pursue bold policies or maintain a low profile.

With the first day of campaigning underway, political watchers are keen to see how these dynamics play out in the lead-up to the election. Expect more updates as this story develops.
