URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Southern 80 skiing event has been officially canceled for March 2026, organizers from the Moama Sports Club announced just hours ago. Citing time constraints, the club revealed that there simply isn’t enough time to prepare for the event, which typically draws large crowds to the Murray River between Echuca and Moama.
The club took to social media to express their disappointment, stating, “with only three months left before our planned date, there is not enough time to arrange the Southern 80 for 2026.” This decision comes in the wake of increased scrutiny surrounding water skiing safety, following a series of tragic incidents in 2024 that prompted NSW Maritime to launch a comprehensive investigation into the sport.
The Southern 80 is renowned for its thrilling race, where teams of two skiers navigate an 80km course that includes 126 bends at speeds exceeding 100km/h. The cancellation marks a significant blow to the local community and ski racing enthusiasts, who have expressed their eagerness for the event’s return.
“We understand that this news may be disappointing to many of you, and we share in your frustration. We want to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support and passion for the sport,”
the club stated in their announcement.
The Moama Sports Club is currently awaiting the release of findings from NSW Maritime, which are essential for implementing any necessary safety changes and developing a return-to-racing plan. “Despite this setback, we are committed to returning to the water stronger and more prepared,” they added.
Looking ahead, the club is focusing on its upcoming Beehag 100 event for 2026, aiming to revive ski racing on the Murray River. As the situation evolves, fans and competitors are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates.
The cancellation of the Southern 80 serves as a reminder of the significant challenges facing water sports today. With safety concerns at the forefront, the community is urged to prioritize safety while eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite events.
As we enter the festive season, the Moama Sports Club extended heartfelt wishes for a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year, expressing hope to see everyone back on the water soon.
