UPDATE: In a stunning turnaround, Stuart Booth has decided against retirement, thanks to the persuasive vision shared by Wangaratta Rovers coach Sam Murray. Booth, who battled a series of injuries, including an enlarged spleen, is back in the game and ready to make a significant impact this season.
After only playing three senior games in 2023, the 29-year-old half-forward was set to hang up his boots. However, during an exit meeting with Murray, Booth found renewed motivation. “Sam sold his vision on what he wanted the club to achieve and especially the guys who went through the wringer with the club,” Booth said. “He wanted us to stick fat for as long as we could.”
Booth’s journey has been marred by injuries, including multiple rib fractures and ongoing soft tissue problems. “I broke my ribs twice close together, and the second one aggravated the spleen, but I didn’t know it for a long time until I got the MRI,” he explained. Under Murray’s guidance, Booth adopted a tailored training regimen that has significantly reduced his injuries. “I’ve barely had a soft tissue since; it’s turned my career around really,” he added.
Booth’s resilience paid off when the Rovers broke a 30-year premiership drought last September, igniting hopes for another successful season. Currently, the Rovers are in prime position to retain their title, leading the minor premiership race by a narrow margin of one game and 14.37 percentage points over Lavington.
As the Rovers gear up for their crucial match against Myrtleford this Saturday, they welcome back several key players, including former Carlton wingman Lochie O’Brien and Northern Territory ace Kieren Parnell. Both teams are on a winning streak, with Myrtleford boasting an impressive average winning margin of 61 points.
Notably, Myrtleford handed the Rovers their only loss earlier this season, defeating them 66 to 22 in round 8, marking one of the club’s lowest scores against them. As they prepare for the rematch, the Rovers are determined to start strong and deliver a complete performance.
With the stakes high and the community rallying behind them, Booth’s commitment to the Rovers is not just a personal victory but a testament to the team’s resilience and ambition. Fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be a thrilling showdown this weekend.
