Sumit Antil Sets Record, India Clinches Fourth in Medal Tally

UPDATE: In an electrifying display of athleticism, India’s Sumit Antil shattered records during the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi on September 30, securing gold in the F64 Javelin Throw with a staggering throw of 71.37m. This victory, alongside Sandip Singh Sargar‘s gold in the F44 event, propelled India to a commendable fourth place in the medal tally.

The atmosphere at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was charged as Antil, a two-time Paralympic champion, showcased his dominance on the track. With Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra cheering in the stands, Antil’s initial throws already surpassed 65m, but he was relentless in his pursuit of excellence. His fifth attempt set a new championship record, further solidifying his legacy as India’s most decorated para-athlete with three World Championship gold medals.

Meanwhile, Sargar clinched gold with an impressive throw of 62.82m, narrowly beating his compatriot, Sandeep Singh, who took silver with 62.67m. The duo marked a historic 1-2 finish for India in the men’s Javelin Throw F44, a separate event this year, highlighting the nation’s burgeoning prowess in para athletics.

“It’s an incredible feeling to contribute to India’s rising status in the sports arena,” Sargar stated post-competition, resonating with the pride felt across the nation. Alongside these achievements, Vanessa Low of Australia claimed her third World Championships gold in the Long Jump T42, setting a new T61 Championship Record of 5.49m.

The evening also witnessed significant milestones, including Magdalena Andruszkiewicz from Poland breaking the World Record in the women’s 100m T72 with a time of 16.82 seconds, surpassing the previous record held since 2023. The competition was fierce, with athletes from around the globe vying for top honors.

As of now, Brazil leads the medal table with a total of seven golds, while India’s haul includes four golds, four silvers, and one bronze, marking a historic upward trajectory in this prestigious event.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to stay tuned for more thrilling updates as the championships continue. Antil and Sargar’s remarkable performances are not only reshaping India’s presence in international para athletics but also inspiring a new generation of athletes.

What’s next? As the championships progress, all eyes will be on the upcoming events, where more athletes will seek to leave their mark and possibly break records. The excitement is palpable, and the world watches as these athletes redefine limits and showcase unparalleled resilience.
