UPDATE: Major changes are underway at the Surf Coast Shire’s Community Asset Committees (CACs) as officials announce the resignation of seven key members and the transition of a committee to a “friends of” group. The developments, shared during the council’s meeting on December 2023, underscore the ongoing challenges of volunteer retention within the community.
The CACs, composed of dedicated volunteers, play a crucial role in maintaining and promoting local facilities, including halls and recreation reserves. However, the latest report highlighted that while volunteer numbers remain reasonably strong, specific committees face difficulties in attracting and retaining members.
Among the resignations are notable figures like Edith Barton and Kara Cheah from the Anderson Roadknight CAC, as well as James Morton and Lynette Clucas from the Deans Marsh CAC. Their contributions have been acknowledged by the council, which is now seeking new energy within these committees.
In a significant shift, the Anglesea Bike Park, previously managed by a CAC, is officially transitioning to a “friends of” model as of June 30. This change allows for less governance oversight, enabling volunteers to focus more on community engagement and less on bureaucratic requirements. The decision was endorsed by the council, signaling a new era for the park’s management.
Cr Joel Grist remarked on the importance of Anglesea Bike Park, stating, “It is an outstanding community asset, much loved by riders of all ages.” He emphasized the commitment of volunteers in maintaining this facility, which draws users from across the region. The council will continue to support the park under a memorandum of understanding with the newly formed friends group.
This restructuring aims to adapt to the evolving needs of the community and ensure that local assets remain well-managed and accessible.
