UPDATE: Just announced, Svitzer has signed a crucial Letter of Intent (LoI) with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) to manufacture cutting-edge electric TRAnsverse tugs in India. This landmark agreement, unveiled during the India Maritime Week in Mumbai, represents a revolutionary step in Svitzer’s electrification strategy and aims to bolster India’s status as a global maritime manufacturing leader.
The collaboration will see Svitzer and CSL working together to construct these state-of-the-art tugboats at CSL’s facilities, marking a significant commitment to the Make in India initiative. The new TRAnsverse tugs are designed to be among the most advanced and environmentally friendly in the industry, aligning perfectly with India’s green port and towage objectives.
Why does this matter NOW? The partnership not only highlights Svitzer’s dedication to sustainability but also enhances India’s maritime capabilities. The TRAnsverse tugs are renowned for their exceptional maneuverability and efficiency, allowing for precise navigation in confined waters while significantly reducing energy consumption and emissions. This development is a critical component of India’s efforts to decarbonize its towage sector and lead the maritime industry toward a low-carbon future.
Kasper Nilaus, CEO of Svitzer, stated, “With this LoI, we are taking a decisive step on our electrification journey. India’s shipbuilding ecosystem—and CSL’s proven track record—make Cochin a great place to further develop and build the TRAnsverse.” He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Government of India’s ambitious Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to create cleaner and safer harbor operations for customers both in India and globally.
Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We look forward to working closely with Svitzer to make plans for building the next-generation TRAnsverse tug in India.” He affirmed that this partnership will showcase CSL’s world-class capabilities, deepen local supply chains, and accelerate the availability of green, high-performance tugboats for ports worldwide.
The new electric TRAnsverse tugs are not only set to rejuvenate Svitzer’s global fleet but will also significantly contribute to local port and terminal operations in India, creating jobs and fostering technological advancements within the maritime sector.
As this story develops, it will be crucial to monitor how this partnership unfolds and the impact it has on India’s maritime landscape. For more information about Svitzer’s commitment to sustainable towage, visit svitzer.com/transverse.
