URGENT UPDATE: A 32-year-old woman from Sydney has been charged following an alleged attempt to smuggle $36 million worth of drugs into Australia through Sydney Airport. She arrived on a flight from South Africa on Saturday afternoon when customs officials discovered suspicious anomalies in her luggage during an x-ray screening.
Upon further inspection, authorities allegedly found over 39 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in vacuum-sealed bags within her suitcases. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that this substantial quantity of methamphetamine could have led to approximately 390,000 street-level deals across the community.
Authorities arrested the woman, charging her with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. She is set to appear in court on Monday.
This arrest marks a significant blow in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking, with the AFP confirming that it is part of a broader crackdown. In recent days, law enforcement has disrupted numerous illicit drug imports, resulting in seven arrests and the seizure of over 100 kilograms of illegal substances at various airports.
“We have disrupted these criminal supply chains, and these arrests should serve as a warning to criminal syndicates attempting to import harmful drugs into our country – we are ready and waiting, and you will be caught,” stated AFP Detective Superintendent Morgen Blunden.
The situation is evolving rapidly, and authorities remain vigilant against further attempts to bring dangerous drugs into Australia. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
