Sydney’s Marrinawi Cove Closing for Upgrades Before Summer

UPDATE: Sydney’s popular swimming spot, Marrinawi Cove, is set to close for three months as the state government initiates vital upgrades just ahead of summer. This closure, effective from next week, aims to enhance safety and expand the swimming area for Sydneysiders eager to enjoy the water.

The harbour swimming hole at Barangaroo Reserve, which opened in January 2023 after the lifting of a long-standing swimming ban, quickly became a favorite for locals and tourists alike. Thousands flocked to this “city beach,” situated a stone’s throw from Sydney’s central business district, drawn by its stunning views and refreshing waters.

However, the site has faced criticism due to crowded and slippery sandstone blocks around the waterway. In response to feedback from over 500 visitors, the government is implementing upgrades that include a new decking platform, non-slip stairs for safer access, and the relocation of sandstone blocks to create more space for towels.

Steve Kamper, Lands and Property Minister, confirmed that construction will kick off next week, with the goal of reopening Marrinawi Cove by mid-December, just in time for the summer school holidays. “We couldn’t have anticipated just how popular swimming at Marrinawi Cove would become,” Kamper stated. “These upgrades are about responding to that popularity and making sure the space is safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.”

The improvements also include a new outdoor shower, an expanded swimming area featuring a realigned shark net, and a depth marker to ensure swimmer safety. Funding for these enhancements is entirely sourced from developer contributions.

As anticipation builds for the revamped swimming experience, residents are left wondering how the upgrades will transform their beloved local spot. The temporary closure could stir emotions among regular visitors, who have cherished the vibrant community atmosphere at Marrinawi Cove.

Stay tuned for further updates as construction progresses, and mark your calendars for the reopening slated for mid-December.
