UPDATE: The annual Telethon fundraiser in Western Australia has achieved an astonishing record, raising an unprecedented $1.5 million this year, a significant increase from last year’s total of over $1 million. The event, which took place this past weekend, has become a cornerstone of community support for vulnerable children across the state.
The fundraising efforts were spearheaded by school kids, including those from St Francis Xavier College in Geraldton, who collectively raised $25,000 through creative initiatives like bake sales and fun runs. These young changemakers demonstrated remarkable dedication, with many donating their own pocket money and organizing events to contribute to the cause.
The success of this year’s Telethon is also attributed to outstanding individuals like Luke Taylor, who completed over 700 km on a treadmill in just seven days, and Andy Donaldson, who undertook an incredible swim-run-swim challenge, both raising thousands for the initiative.
As the Telethon theme suggests, “We can be Incredible Together.” This year, the total amount raised since the Telethon’s inception in 1968 has surpassed $750 million, marking a historic milestone for the event and for the state.
Corporate and political leaders stepped up with significant contributions. The Stan Perron Charitable Foundation made a staggering donation of $10 million, while mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP each contributed $5.5 million. Additional donations came from Hancock at $2.5 million and the McCusker Charitable Foundation with a generous $4 million.
Earlier this week, BHP Australia CEO Geraldine Slattery emphasized the importance of Telethon, stating, “Telethon allows the community, business, and government to come together and pursue something amazing that we can all get behind.”
The State Government showed its commitment by donating an impressive $14 million, while the Federal Government added $6 million to the total. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles, who shared a personal story of his own challenges with a sick child, expressed his admiration for the generosity displayed by Australians. “Every year, we’re inspired by the big-heartedness of Australians who dig deep to support Telethon,” he said.
Every dollar raised will go directly to support at least 161 beneficiaries, providing crucial assistance to children in need across Western Australia. Laetitia Cain, whose son Charlie is living with two rare genetic conditions, highlighted the profound impact of Telethon, stating, “Telethon completely saved me and my family’s life.”
