BREAKING NEWS: Perry Bamonte, the iconic guitarist and keyboard player of The Cure, has tragically passed away at the age of 65. The band announced his death today, revealing that he died “after a short illness at home” in a statement filled with profound sadness.
The statement shared on the band’s official website described Bamonte as “quiet, intensive, intuitive, constant and hugely creative.” Known affectionately as “Teddy,” he was a warm-hearted and vital part of The Cure’s enduring legacy. The band emphasized his significant contributions, stating, “He will be very greatly missed.”
Bamonte joined The Cure in 1990, having initially been part of the band’s road crew since 1984. He played a pivotal role in the band’s success, contributing to acclaimed albums such as Wish (1992), Wild Mood Swings (1996), and Bloodflowers (2000). Throughout his tenure, he performed over 400 shows, becoming a full member after the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell.
Most recently, Bamonte rejoined The Cure in 2022, performing in another 90 shows, including standout performances at major concerts. His final performance was at The Show Of A Lost World in London on November 1, 2024, which marked a high point in the band’s history.
Bamonte’s impact extended beyond The Cure. He was also a member of the supergroup Love Amongst Ruin, releasing two studio albums, and he was known for his passion for fly fishing and illustrating for the magazine Fly Culture.
Former bandmate and drummer Lol Tolhurst shared his grief in an emotional Instagram tribute, stating, “So sad to hear about Perry Bamonte passing. Cindy and I send our condolences to all that knew him. Farewell Teddy.”
The Cure, formed in 1976 by lead singer Robert Smith and Tolhurst, has been a major influence on the goth, post-punk, and indie music scenes. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
