Thousands Honor Paul Downie in Emotional Farewell Ceremony

UPDATE: Nearly 1,000 attendees gathered at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Perth to honor the life of Paul Downie, a beloved public relations figure who passed away on October 7, 2023, after a courageous nine-month battle with cancer. Friends, family, and colleagues flew in from across the globe to pay their respects at the emotional service held on Wednesday.

The outpouring of support highlighted Downie’s profound impact on Western Australia’s business landscape. Esteemed representatives from FTI Consulting and other prominent firms attended, reflecting his legacy in the field he helped shape. Downie had a distinguished career, serving as senior managing director for FTI in both Australia and Singapore until his retirement in 2022.

In a touching tribute, Western Australian District Court Judge John Prior likened Downie to the character Mr. Happy, emphasizing his unwavering optimism. “He left a lasting legacy that encouraged all to embrace life with enthusiasm,” Prior stated, capturing the essence of Downie’s influence on those around him.

Downie’s younger brother, Tim, shared personal reflections, describing his sibling as a man who brought joy to every situation. “Paul had an insatiable love of life and a quenchless desire to share joy with others,” he said, fondly recalling their childhood in Nedlands, a stone’s throw from the church.

His son Patrick took to the lectern wearing his father’s signature bright yellow suit jacket, honoring a man he called his idol. “From humble beginnings as an agricultural journalist, Dad rose to lead a multinational corporation with kindness and humor,” Patrick remarked, emphasizing his father’s ability to connect with people and instill kindness in everyone he met.

Downie was not just a business leader but also an accomplished open water swimmer who crossed the English Channel in 2011. He was a key figure in Perth’s ocean swimming community, often seen supporting fellow swimmers in various challenges worldwide. Close friend and founder of Perth’s Port to Pub swim, Ceinwen Roberts, praised Downie’s inspiring spirit, stating, “He was a joy giver, not a joy taker.”

The tributes poured in from many who knew him well. Jim Kelly, senior managing director at Sodali and Co, described Downie as “beautifully unique,” highlighting his loyalty, humility, and infectious smile that could light up any room. Many attendees reminisced about his active involvement in charity events, showcasing his commitment to giving back to the community.

As friends and family bid farewell, Downie’s legacy continues to resonate in the lives he touched. He is survived by his wife Didi, their three children, and grandchildren, leaving behind a vibrant legacy of kindness, connection, and inspiration.

The immediate impact of Downie’s passing is felt deeply across the business community and beyond, as many reflect on the values he embodied and the joy he brought into their lives.
