URGENT UPDATE: Three men have been rescued after their boat capsized off the coast of Shoal Bay in Port Stephens early today. Emergency services were alerted just after 5 AM on January 1 when reports came in about the capsized vessel.
Authorities from Marine Area Command quickly responded and located the three men—aged 42, 43, and 57—who had managed to climb onto the hull of their capsized boat. They notified emergency personnel about their predicament, allowing for a swift rescue operation.
Preliminary reports indicate that the vessel encountered large waves while attempting to cross the bar near Tomaree Headland, which led to its capsizing. The men were subsequently taken back to Shoal Bay where they received treatment from paramedics for mild hypothermia. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.
In a separate incident, Marine Rescue Port Stephens was called late last night to assist a catamaran that struck rocks on the ocean side of Fingal Island. Due to rough conditions, the rescue service could not safely send a crew member aboard the catamaran. Instead, they established an escort to guide the vessel back into Port Stephens, where it was anchored safely in Shoal Bay.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. For those in the area, be advised of ongoing rough waters and exercise caution. This developing story highlights the unpredictable nature of maritime conditions in the region, underlining the importance of safety measures for all boaters.
