Tim Ross Launches ‘What a Ripper!’ Celebrating Aussie Design Today

UPDATE: Tim Ross is set to launch his highly anticipated book, What a Ripper!, on August 30, 2025, at the National Library. This new release highlights 60 everyday objects that have significantly shaped Australian culture, from the nostalgic Dolphin torch to the iconic Stackhat bike helmet.

This book is more than just a tribute; it’s a heartfelt journey for anyone who remembers life before the internet. Ross, a prominent figure in Australian design advocacy, emphasizes the importance of everyday items that often go unnoticed. He recalls that these objects, such as the Regis glassware and Aerogard, were staples of Australian homes but are rarely celebrated.

In What a Ripper!, readers will rediscover the stories behind these familiar items, evoking memories and emotions tied to their past. Ross states, “A simple plastic torch like the Dolphin can remind us of games of spotto or traipsing to the caravan-park toilet in the middle of the night.” The book captures the essence of shared experiences that these products provided to generations of Australians.

The upcoming launch event will feature special guest Mary Featherstone, a renowned furniture designer who, along with her late husband, contributed significantly to Australian design. Ross aims to celebrate both the book and Featherstone’s legacy, stating, “She has such enthusiasm for life and incredible energy, and she’s got so much to share.”

Ross’s journey to writing this book began five years ago during his exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, where he showcased many of these objects. He noted, “There were all these items in the museum – Dolphin torches, Gold Phones, Planet lamps – and I thought, ‘Maybe we should do an exhibition on this?’” However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans, leading to the creation of the book instead.

This launch is critical not only for design enthusiasts but also for anyone who cherishes the cultural heritage of Australia. Ross highlights, “What we don’t do is everyday items in the same way. Today, there are a lot of interesting things being designed, but they tend to be quite obscure.”

The book also features fun anecdotes, including Ross’s humorous take on childhood memories tied to common household items. For example, he recalls the embarrassment of seeing a family member in a Speedo, which resonates with many readers.

As the launch date approaches, anticipation is building around What a Ripper! and its exploration of Australia’s design history. Ross encourages everyone to reflect on the everyday items that have shaped their lives and to appreciate how these objects connect us all.

Don’t miss the launch on August 30, 2025, at 3 PM at the National Library. Tickets are available now, and this event promises to be a celebration of Australian culture that you won’t want to miss!
