Tumut Turf Club Cancels Boxing Day Races Due to Ambulance Shortage

URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Boxing Day races at the Tumut Turf Club have been abruptly canceled due to an ambulance shortage, creating disappointment for racing fans. The decision was announced on December 25, 2023, just before the event was set to take place, leaving many in the community reeling.

Club president Dave Rosetta expressed regret over the situation, stating, “These things happen and it’s not the end of the world.” Despite the disappointment, Rosetta emphasized the importance of safety, noting that the club had explored all options in collaboration with Racing NSW and Ambulance NSW to ensure the event could proceed.

The cancellation marks a significant loss for the community, as the Boxing Day races have become a cherished tradition in Tumut. The club had drawn strong interest with 65 acceptors lined up for the five non-TAB races, making the decision to cancel even more heartbreaking for fans and participants alike.

While discussions will occur regarding the possibility of rescheduling the meeting, Rosetta stated, “It’s unfortunate, we’re disappointed but we’re moving forward.” He added that the committee ultimately decided it was not in their best interest to hold off-track festivities due to associated costs and logistical challenges.

Looking ahead, the Tumut Turf Club has plans for two more race dates this season: the Tumut Mile on January 17 and the Tumut Cup meeting on February 7.

As the community processes this sudden cancellation, many are hoping for a swift resolution and a return to the beloved racing tradition in the near future. The emotional impact of this announcement is significant, as local fans and families look forward to future events that bring joy and togetherness.

Stay tuned for further updates as Tumut Turf Club explores options for rescheduling and enhancing safety measures for upcoming racing events.
