URGENT UPDATE: Two men have tragically died following separate stabbing incidents in Melbourne, intensifying concerns over a rising wave of knife crime in the region. Authorities were alerted to the first incident at an apartment block in Fitzroy around 9:45 PM on Monday, where officers discovered a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Meanwhile, just hours earlier, a second stabbing occurred in Clyde around 3:30 PM, involving an altercation between two men. One man was reportedly stabbed before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, which later crashed on Clyde-Five Ways Road. He was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident.
As Melbourne grapples with these violent events, Victoria Police remain on high alert. Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush expressed grave concerns about the spike in knife-related crimes, stating, “I am acutely aware of how much concern knife crime generates in the Victorian community.” He highlighted that more than 15,000 knives, machetes, and zombie knives have been seized and destroyed in 2025 alone, underscoring the urgent need for public safety.
The emergence of this violence is alarming, especially as statistics reveal that incidents involving machetes have tripled since 2021, with young males accounting for nearly 40% of these occurrences, according to Crime Statistics Agency data.
In light of this crisis, a recent machete amnesty program, which concluded on November 30, successfully led to the surrender of around 25,000 weapons. Despite these efforts, the community’s anxiety over safety remains palpable, as residents seek reassurance from law enforcement.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant. The homicide squad is expected to arrive at the scene in Fitzroy later today to further probe these shocking events.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. The safety of the community hangs in the balance, and the impact of these incidents is being felt widely.
