Ukraine Accused of Targeting Putin’s Residence in Urgent Clash

BREAKING: Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to attack President Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, a claim Kyiv dismisses as baseless. This accusation, made earlier today, threatens to derail ongoing peace negotiations and escalate tensions between the two nations.

In a statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Ukraine launched 91 long-range drones on December 28-29, all of which were allegedly intercepted by Russian air defenses. Lavrov characterized the purported attack as “state terrorism” and warned that Russia would retaliate, although he provided no evidence to support these assertions.

The timing of this accusation is critical, as it coincides with discussions about a potential peace deal. Lavrov confirmed that Russia is reevaluating its position in negotiations, stating, “Such reckless actions will not go unanswered.” He indicated that retaliatory targets have already been selected.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, however, vehemently denied the attack, labeling Russia’s claims as a pretext for further aggression. “Another round of lies from the Russian Federation,” he declared via WhatsApp, emphasizing that the accusations seem to be a tactic to undermine progress in US-Ukrainian talks aimed at ending the war.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump met with Zelenskiy in Florida, asserting that the two nations are “getting a lot closer, maybe very close” to an agreement to resolve the conflict. However, he acknowledged that “thorny” territorial issues remain unresolved, particularly concerning the region of Zaporizhzhia and the contested areas of Donbas.

Zelenskiy indicated that they discussed a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, though he noted that it is only “95 percent ready.” He aims for a long-term, 50-year security deal to ensure Ukraine’s protection. The Ukrainian leader also expressed concerns that Russia aims to disrupt cooperative efforts between the US and Ukraine, particularly following this week’s high-level meetings.

The ongoing conflict has seen Russia control about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014. Putin’s forces currently control approximately 75% of the Zaporizhzhia region, and reports indicate that Russian military leaders are pushing to secure full control of the area.

In response to the accusations, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha took to social media, urging world leaders to condemn Russia’s claims as attempts to fabricate justification for military action against Ukraine. “This is a fabrication intended to create a pretext for more Russian attacks,” he stated.

As the situation continues to develop, the implications of these tensions could significantly affect the trajectory of peace negotiations. The international community is watching closely, with heightened concerns that these exchanges could lead to further military escalations.

Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds. The stakes are high, and the potential for conflict escalation is imminent.
