URGENT UPDATE: A fierce bushfire continues to blaze in the Upper Murray region, with officials warning of worsening conditions due to soaring temperatures. As of Thursday, January 8, the fire, located approximately 27 kilometres west of Walwa in Mount Lawson State Park, has consumed over 1,500 hectares and is showing no signs of slowing down.
Authorities have issued a total fire ban for the North East, emphasizing that residents should evacuate immediately as conditions are expected to deteriorate further. A watch and act message is currently in effect for the following areas: Berringama, Bullioh, Burrowye, Darbyshire, Guys Forest, Koetong, Lucyvale, Mount Alfred, Shelley, Tallangatta East, and Tallangatta Valley.
Two crucial community meetings are scheduled for today at the Bullioh Fire Station and the Walwa Recreation Reserve at 11:30 AM. These sessions aim to keep residents informed, with live streaming available on the Towong Shire Council Facebook page.
Forest Fire Management Victoria’s chief fire officer, Chris Hardman, states that the Walwa-Mount Lawson fire is likely to expand, driven by forecasted temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday. “With the conditions that we have ahead of us, these fires will not be able to be suppressed,” Mr. Hardman cautioned on Wednesday.
As the situation develops, residents are urged to stay tuned for updates and follow safety protocols. The community’s safety remains the top priority as firefighters brace for challenging conditions ahead.
