Urgent: 13-Year-Old Boy in Critical Condition After Shark Attack

UPDATE: A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition following a shocking shark attack at Shark Beach in Vaucluse, Sydney, just before 4:20 PM today. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of the incident, with police and Marine Area Command officers rescuing the boy “within minutes.”

Witnesses describe a scene of chaos as the boy was pulled from the water, suffering severe leg injuries believed to be caused by a large shark. Water Police quickly applied two medical tourniquets and provided first aid on a police vessel before transporting him to Rose Bay Wharf. There, NSW Ambulance Paramedics treated him for serious injuries before he was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital.

Authorities confirmed that the attack occurred near a popular swimming area, which has now been closed to the public. Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water as safety measures are implemented.

Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty addressed the critical situation, stating, “This is a tragic shark attack on a young boy having a swim on a Sunday afternoon in a harbour beach in Sydney’s east. Our thoughts are with the young boy and his family.” The Department of Primary Industries is currently working to identify the species of shark involved in the attack.

The incident has heightened concerns among beachgoers, particularly as this is not the first attack in recent years. In early 2024, a young woman was bitten at Elizabeth Bay, and a surfer tragically died after an attack at Long Reef Beach last September. These events highlight an alarming trend of shark encounters in Sydney Harbour, raising questions about safety at local beaches.

As the community awaits updates on the boy’s condition, officials will be monitoring the situation closely. Investigations will continue to determine the exact circumstances of the attack and what preventive measures may be necessary moving forward.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
