UPDATE: A Facebook page masquerading as a New Zealand news outlet is spreading AI-generated images and videos that misrepresent critical events, according to a new report. The page, named NZ News Hub, has been identified as a source of misleading information that could undermine public trust in legitimate media.
Authorities confirm that this page has been publishing content that claims to depict breaking news, including the recent tragic Mt Maunganui landslide that resulted in six fatalities. However, a thorough investigation by AAP FactCheck reveals that the imagery used is entirely fabricated by artificial intelligence, raising serious concerns about its authenticity.
This alarming trend comes on the heels of several false AI images circulated by NZ News Hub, including one purporting to show a rescue operation off Akaroa Head on January 31, 2024, where 41 people were rescued. The image does not even resemble the actual location of the incident, with distorted faces and an inaccurate depiction of the rescue boats.
Dr. Andrew Lensen, a senior lecturer in AI at Victoria University of Wellington, highlighted the dangers of such misinformation, stating, “These pages want to get as much engagement as possible to build their following and potential ad revenue.” The implications are dire as the spread of fake news could significantly erode public confidence in reputable news sources.
In addition to misrepresenting rescue operations, NZ News Hub has also created AI-generated images of police during alleged anti-immigration protests in Auckland, showing clearly distorted features and incorrect uniform details. Other instances include fabricated reports about kereru birds running into glass windows, with images not corresponding to real-life scenarios, and AI animations of deceased individuals, including a victim of the Mt Maunganui tragedy.
The page has been flagged for its use of AI to animate still photographs from legitimate media, including a controversial post that animated a photo of a grieving family, which did not match any original footage. Such manipulations not only mislead the public but can also deeply affect the families involved in these tragedies.
AAP FactCheck reached out to NZ News Hub for comment but received no response. This lack of accountability raises further red flags about the legitimacy of the content being disseminated through the platform.
As misinformation continues to proliferate online, users must remain vigilant. The spread of AI-generated media can have far-reaching consequences, potentially leading to increased distrust not only in social media but also in established news organizations.
In a world where trust in journalism is already precarious, this situation underscores the urgent need for critical consumption of news. Authorities urge the public to verify information and rely on credible sources to avoid being misled by spurious claims.
