Urgent Appeal Following Deadly Arson Linked to Tobacco Kingpin

UPDATE: A shocking arson attack in Melbourne has led police to urge deported tobacco cartel kingpin Kazem Hamad to reveal the identities of two individuals responsible for the deadly fire. The incident, which occurred on January 16, 2023, claimed the life of 27-year-old Katie Tangey, a beloved burlesque performer, as well as her family’s dog, when arsonists mistakenly targeted her brother’s home in Truganina.

Authorities are calling this incident a tragic mistake amid escalating violence in the illicit tobacco trade. Police have announced a $500,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the culprits, who are described as “faceless and gutless” by Detective Inspector Chris Murray. The investigation has taken a turn as police believe their prime suspect, Hamad, orchestrated the attack from abroad after being deported to Iraq in 2023.

Detective Inspector Murray stated that the attack was intended for a different target—a rival in the ongoing “tobacco wars” that have seen over 100 businesses firebombed across Melbourne. “We know there was a theft of his commodities, being illegal tobacco, and we know he sought retribution,” he said, emphasizing that the fire claimed the life of an innocent bystander.

Police have confirmed that Tangey had no involvement in the illegal tobacco trade, making her death all the more heartbreaking for her grieving family. “This was a gutless act that has devastated a community,” Murray added. Authorities are confident that they are close to apprehending the killers and hope that the reward will provide the necessary lead.

In June, police executed a search warrant in Dandenong, seizing mobile phones that are now under forensic examination. They have also released a computer-generated image of a suspect, described as a man aged between 25 and 30, with a slim build and Middle Eastern appearance.

Murray has made a direct appeal to Hamad, urging him to take responsibility for his actions. “He can get us on the phone and let us know the two individuals who actually did this; they should be held accountable,” he stated. The police are also considering indemnity from prosecution for anyone who provides useful information regarding the case.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, reflecting on the tragic loss of a vibrant life due to the violent clashes within the illegal tobacco market. The police have vowed to pursue justice relentlessly, ensuring that those responsible will be held accountable.

The urgency of this appeal is palpable, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward. The quest for justice for Katie Tangey continues, and authorities are hopeful that the community will assist in solving this heartbreaking case.
