Urgent: Ardeer Station Expansion Plans Cut Amid Melton Upgrade

UPDATE: Plans to expand platforms at Ardeer Station have been abruptly cut following a just announced decision by the Victoria State Government to fast-track the Melton Line Upgrade. The change means Ardeer will miss out on vital improvements to accommodate nine-carriage VLocity trains, instead of the existing six-carriage capacity.

The government revealed that extending Ardeer’s platforms would necessitate a complete station rebuild due to space limitations and curved platforms. This announcement comes as part of an effort to enhance public transport services in Melbourne’s rapidly growing western suburbs. However, platforms will still be extended at nearby Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Rockbank, and Cobblebank stations.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang expressed disappointment over the decision, highlighting that Ardeer is located near the Sunshine Superhub and serves crucial population growth corridors. “The electrification of the Melton line is an important step to provide commuters with better transport services,” Cr Dang stated. She urged the Victorian government to prioritize the necessary construction works for electrification and expansion once Sunshine’s upgrades are complete.

Officials confirmed that there will be no immediate impact on service levels at Ardeer following the Melton line enhancements. The newly constructed Melton Station, set to feature four platforms for Ballarat train services, is expected to open next year. This station will cater to dedicated services starting and ending at Melton, including the anticipated nine-carriage trains.

Additionally, a new stabling yard will be established at Cobblebank, ensuring that longer VLocity trains are in place for morning services to Melbourne. Construction for the stabling yard and platform extensions is expected to commence in early 2024, with the full rollout of nine-carriage VLocity trains projected for 2027.

As the region anticipates these upgrades, the decision to sideline Ardeer raises concerns about public transport accessibility for years to come. Local officials and residents are calling for a clear timeline and budget commitments from the government to ensure that Ardeer does not fall behind in transport improvements.
