Urgent Community Event to Combat Rising Homelessness in Ranges

URGENT UPDATE: A critical community event is set to address the alarming rise in homelessness within the Macedon Ranges. The Macedon Ranges Council, in collaboration with Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, will host a vital networking and service expo on August 5, 2023, at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Doors open at 10:30 AM with the event kicking off at 11:00 AM.

According to the latest statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, homelessness in the Macedon Ranges surged by 31.4 percent between the 2016 and 2021 Census. Mayor Dom Bonanno emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “Homelessness is a complex issue that touches more lives than many people realise.” He further noted that events like this are essential in reducing stigma and connecting individuals with necessary services.

The expo aims to raise awareness and foster community engagement, providing attendees with a chance to meet local services and learn about available support. “By working together and raising awareness, we can take meaningful steps towards ending homelessness in the Macedon Ranges,” Bonanno added.

With the Victorian Government’s recent housing targets, Bonanno reiterated the need for local, affordable housing. A significant $30 million investment has been allocated for the Macedon Ranges through the Big Housing Build initiative. However, only $12.5 million has been allocated to date. Questions remain regarding the remaining $17.5 million, with the Mayor calling for clarity from the government on its allocation and encouraging partnerships to enhance local housing availability.

Homelessness Week serves as a national campaign, urging both community support and government action to combat this growing crisis. The upcoming event is free and open to everyone, with no registration required, making it an accessible opportunity for community members to engage with this pressing issue.

As the event approaches, officials and community leaders are working tirelessly to mobilize support and resources aimed at tackling homelessness in the region. The stakes are high, and the need for immediate action has never been more crucial. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the solution—mark your calendars for August 5 at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute.
