Urgent: Frankston Beach Faces New Damage from Unauthorized Works

UPDATE: New reports confirm that Frankston Beach has been struck by more unauthorized construction activities, with immediate concerns for public safety and environmental damage. An excavator was spotted tearing up rocks on the shoreline of Port Phillip Bay, just south of Olivers Hill, on Sunday, raising alarms among local authorities and residents.

The Department of Environment, Energy, and Climate Action (DEECA) revealed on Tuesday that no permits were issued for any works on this stretch of Crown land. “We have been on site to gather evidence,” stated a DEECA spokesperson, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Videos captured on social media show the excavator actively digging, prompting immediate action from officials.

This incident follows the ongoing enforcement action against a local resident, Gene Neill, who admitted to constructing an illegal seawall nearby back in March 2023. Neill’s controversial seawall was built without permission, supposedly to protect his multimillion-dollar home from erosion, a move that sparked significant backlash from the community. While DEECA is investigating the new works, there is currently no evidence linking Neill to this weekend’s digging.

Authorities have reached out to several property owners near the site, attempting to identify those responsible for the recent activity. However, as of now, the culprit behind the excavator’s operations remains unknown. Residents are expressing their frustration and concern, fearing further degradation of the beloved public beach.

This latest development highlights a growing trend of unauthorized coastal works that threaten public land and environmental integrity. Community members are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities to protect their shared spaces.

What’s next? DEECA is actively investigating the situation, and more updates are expected shortly. Residents are encouraged to follow local news and social media for real-time updates on this developing story. With the future of Frankston Beach hanging in the balance, locals are rallying together to safeguard their environment and hold those responsible accountable.

Stay tuned for more urgent updates as this situation unfolds.
