UPDATE: A 32-year-old man has been charged after a shocking incident where a car rammed the gates of a synagogue in Brisbane on Friday, October 27, 2023. The attack, which occurred shortly after 7 PM on Margaret Street, has raised serious concerns about safety in the community.
According to police reports, the driver used a Toyota Hilux utility to violently knock down the gates of the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by law enforcement. He is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday facing charges of wilful damage, serious vilification, and a hate crime, alongside allegations of dangerously operating a vehicle and possessing dangerous drugs.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli called the attack “concerning,” emphasizing that Jewish Australians may feel deeply distressed by the event. In a statement on social media, he declared, “I have spoken to Jewish leaders, as well as police, and I want to assure Queenslanders we are taking this seriously.” Crisafulli highlighted the need for strong legislative measures to protect worshippers from such acts, noting, “This is another signal as to why we have put strong laws before parliament to protect all people where they worship.”
The Premier also mentioned ongoing efforts to pass new legislation aimed at combating hate crimes, though an inquiry has revealed that multiple stakeholders, including the Federation of Islamic Councils and the Islamic Council of Queensland, were not consulted prior to the bill’s drafting. Under the proposed laws, the Queensland Attorney-General would have the authority to outlaw certain phrases, punishable by up to two years in prison.
Police confirmed that their investigation into the incident is ongoing, urging anyone with information to come forward. As this situation develops, the community is left grappling with the implications of such an attack, further underscoring the importance of dialogue and support for affected groups.
This incident highlights urgent issues regarding community safety and the rising concerns surrounding hate crimes in Australia. Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation progresses and legal measures are discussed in parliament.
