Urgent: Medieval Tower in Rome Partially Collapses, Worker Trapped

BREAKING: A 29-metre medieval tower, the Torre dei Conti, has partially collapsed during renovation efforts in central Rome near the iconic Colosseum. Emergency responders are actively working to rescue a trapped worker, while another has been hospitalized with serious injuries.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with fire department spokesman Luca Cari stating, “We are trying to get him out alive, but the situation is complex because of the risk of further collapses.” This urgent situation unfolded earlier today, September 30, 2023, as hundreds of tourists witnessed the dramatic rescue efforts.

Authorities confirm that the worker in the hospital is not in life-threatening condition. Two additional workers sustained minor injuries but declined hospital treatment. The collapse has sent clouds of debris into the air, further complicating the rescue as firefighters struggled to ensure safety.

Witnesses reported that the tower suffered at least two collapses, with videos circulating on social media capturing the moment debris poured from the structure. The building, which has been undergoing renovation since it was closed in 2006, has not been in use and was part of a four-year project expected to conclude next year.

Local officials, including Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, are present at the site, monitoring the situation closely. The area around the tower was already cordoned off to pedestrians due to ongoing restoration work.

Originally erected by Pope Innocent III in the early 13th century, the Torre dei Conti once served as city hall offices but was reduced in height following damage from earthquakes in the 14th and 17th centuries. As the rescue efforts continue, authorities are urging onlookers to stay clear of the area to allow firefighters to perform their duties safely.

This evolving situation is being closely monitored, and updates will follow as rescue efforts progress and more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest developments in this urgent story.
