Urgent Memorial Honors Fallen Officers Thompson and de Waart-Hottart

UPDATE: Today marks a poignant National Police Remembrance Day as families gather to honor the memory of two officers, Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart, tragically murdered by Australia’s most wanted man. Their names will forever echo in the hearts of their colleagues and the community as the nation mourns their loss.

The memorial service is held at the police memorial on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, with family members of the fallen officers expected to attend. This day serves as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by law enforcement officers who go to work but never return home.

On August 26, Thompson and de Waart-Hottart were gunned down in Porepunkah while executing a search warrant. Leading Senior Constable Thompson, a seasoned veteran with 38 years of service, was just days away from retirement when his life was cut short. The ongoing hunt for their alleged killer, Dezi Freeman, continues, with hundreds of officers still engaged in the search.

“When a police officer is killed in the line of duty, the impact is felt across every force in Australia,”

stated Mike Bush, Chief of Victoria Police. He emphasized the collective grief felt for Thompson and de Waart-Hottart, both of whom are deeply missed by their colleagues.

In addition to Thompson and de Waart-Hottart, the memorial will recognize another 11 police and protective service officers who have died from illness and other circumstances. The commemorations also honor Tasmania Police Constable Keith Anthony Smith, fatally shot in June while responding to a call in North Motton. A man is currently facing murder charges in his case.

As part of the day’s tributes, Trevor Price, aged 97, will honor his grandfather, Constable Albert Price, who was murdered in 1905 at just 29 years old. Family members and colleagues across the country will participate in similar remembrance events, making this a day of deep reflection and respect.

With the names of Thompson and de Waart-Hottart to be added to the national police memorial in 2026, this day stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of those who serve and protect. Events are taking place nationwide, including a march from AFP Headquarters to the police memorial in Parkes, ACT.

This National Police Remembrance Day serves not just as a day of mourning but also as a powerful reminder of the bravery and commitment of police officers across Australia. As the nation unites in remembrance, the stories of these fallen heroes continue to resonate deeply within the community.
