UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded at the Dubai Airshow today as an Indian Tejas fighter jet crashed in a spectacular fireball, resulting in the death of the pilot. The crash occurred around 2:15 PM local time, shocking attendees and prompting an immediate investigation by the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Witnesses reported seeing the jet perform for approximately eight minutes before it nosedived into the ground. Jignesh Variya, a spectator at the event, described the horrifying scene to Reuters: “I could see three different fireballs when it collided with the ground.” Emergency services swiftly responded, with firefighting teams deployed to control the blaze.
This crash marks the second known incident involving the Tejas, which is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and powered by engines from General Electric (GE). In a statement, GE said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of the Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet at the Dubai Airshow and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of the pilot.” Dubai’s government confirmed that emergency teams were managing the situation effectively on-site.
The Tejas jet, first manufactured in 2001, was designed as a light combat aircraft to replace India’s aging fleet of Russian MiG-21s. The IAF plans to operate a fleet of nearly 220 Tejas fighters and its advanced Mk-1A variants over the next decade, although delays in engine deliveries from GE due to post-COVID-19 supply chain issues have hampered progress.
Despite being the first fully domestic Indian fighter jet not based on foreign designs, export interest has been limited, according to UK-based defense analyst Francis Tusa. He noted that while there is ongoing work on a Tejas II, the aircraft still faces challenges in gaining international traction.
