Urgent Recovery Mission Underway for Two Women Found in Alpine Region

UPDATE: A critical recovery mission is currently in progress in Victoria’s alpine region after the bodies of two women were discovered near Cleve Cole Hut. The distressing find occurred at approximately 12:50 PM on Friday, January 12, when two hikers stumbled upon the scene while traversing the remote area near Nelse, northeast of the popular Falls Creek ski resort.

Authorities swiftly responded to the hikers’ alert, deploying teams to the rugged location. The identities of the women remain unknown, but police estimate they were likely in their 20s or 30s and may have been hiking or camping in the area. As of now, there have been no reports of missing persons that could be linked to this tragic discovery.

Authorities have announced that the recovery efforts will resume on Saturday after adverse weather conditions forced rescuers to camp overnight at the site. Cleve Cole Hut is a well-known stopping point for hikers aiming for Mt Bogong, typically surrounded by beautiful gums and alpine grasslands, especially as the ski season winds down with only six lifts still operational at Falls Creek.

The police have emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the women’s deaths appear to be non-suspicious. However, they are urging the public for assistance in identifying the victims, as there are currently no matching missing person reports.

This developing situation underscores the risks associated with remote hiking in alpine regions, particularly as the snow season draws to a close. As rescue teams prepare to continue their efforts, the focus remains on bringing closure to this heartbreaking incident.

Stay tuned for further updates as authorities work tirelessly to clarify the circumstances and identities involved.
